Spring Plum Bloom Doily – Free Pattern with Japanese Stitch Chart

This delicate, lacy crochet doily is inspired by Hitoe-ume (Single-Layer Plum Blossom), capturing the soft, poetic hues of early spring.

Worked in the round from the center outward, the design features abundant puff stitches that create a rich, tactile texture. With each round, the petals gently unfurl like a blossom opening its heart after a quiet winter.

Measuring approximately 15.5 cm (6.1 inches) across, it is the perfect size to accent your favorite tabletop or serve as an elegant coaster under a teacup. Whether worked in naturally dyed botanical silk or a treasured leftover from your yarn stash, this quick project brings a quiet touch of Japanese grace to your everyday space.

Why You’ll Love This Pattern

  • Rich Texture & Floral Elegance: Plentiful puff stitches build soft, layered petals from the inside out, giving this delicate piece striking depth and dimension.
  • Quick & Satisfying Stash Buster: Requiring only about 34 meters (6g) of yarn, it is the perfect mindful project to use up precious leftovers of hand-dyed, silk, or botanical fibers.
  • Bilingual & Chart-Friendly: Includes row-by-row written instructions in standard US crochet terms alongside a traditional, easy-to-follow Japanese symbol chart.
  • Versatile Everyday Accent: At roughly 15.5 cm (6.1 inches), it works effortlessly as a tabletop doily, a candle mat, or a refined coaster.

Special Stitches

2-dc cl (2-double crochet cluster): [Yarn over, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] 2 times, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

Notes

  • Starting positions for each row: In some rows (such as Rows 1-4 and 6-8), the last stitch is joined with a crochet stitch (sc, hdc, or dc) instead of a chain and slip stitch. This is to position your hook in the center of the loop, ready to start the next row immediately without moving the yarn.
  • Moving the starting point: At the end of Row 5 and Row 9, multiple slip stitches are used to travel across the stitches. Please follow these steps carefully as they are necessary to move your hook to the correct starting position for the next row’s pattern.
  • Check your cluster counts: To maintain the correct shape of the pattern, please verify the number of clusters in each space:
  1. Rows 5 and 9: Each ch-5 space must contain 5 clusters.
  2. Row 11: Each ch-7 space must contain 6 clusters.
