Beaded Shell Stitch Pouch – Free Pattern with Japanese Stitch Chart

Beaded Shell Stitch Pouch: Vintage Romance & Subtle Shimmer

The Beaded Shell Stitch Pouch is an elegant, vintage-inspired drawstring pouch that beautifully harmonizes tactile crochet texture with the delicate sparkle of beadwork.

Worked in a plump, classic shell stitch, the fabric has a satisfying, structured drape accented by tiny glass seed beads (size 8/0) crocheted directly into the stitches. As the pouch moves, the beads catch the light with an understated, antique-like gleam—adding just the right touch of timeless sophistication.

Photographed in naturally dyed spun silk in traditional Japanese botanical shades—the gentle autumn yellow-green of Ominaeshi (女郎花) and the soft spring blossom pink of Hitoe-ume (一重梅)—this piece is designed to age gracefully over time, deepening in character the more it is loved and carried. Measuring approximately 14 cm (5.5”) wide by 13 cm (5”) tall when laid flat, it is the perfect charming keepsake for jewelry, cosmetics, essential notions, or mindful gifting.

Pattern Notes

Pre-stringing beads: String all beads onto the working yarn before you begin crocheting. Since beads cannot be added once you start, it is highly recommended to string extra beads. This will save you from having to cut and rejoin the yarn if you miscount or run short.

Base and Edging: The base and the edging sections are worked without turning at the end of the round. The Right Side (RS) will always be facing you.

Shell Stitch Section: The shell stitch pattern section is worked by turning the work at the end of each round.

Bead Placement: When working a beaded stitch, the bead will naturally be pushed to the side facing away from you. Therefore, bead stitches are worked on Wrong Side (WS) rounds to ensure the beads appear on the Right Side (RS) of the finished piece.

Tips for stringing small beads:

If the holes of your beads are too small for a tapestry needle, try the following method to string them:

  1. Apply a generous amount of PVA craft glue to the end of the yarn.
  2. Let it dry completely until the yarn becomes stiff and hard.
  3. Cut the stiffened tip at an angle to create a sharp point.
  4. Use this stiffened end like a needle to easily string your beads onto the yarn.
